THE GRADE 6 (Beginner) BAND PROGRAM AT PRMS

Band is offered to students in Grade 6 who choose to make a yearlong commitment to study an instrument.  Beginner Band rehearsals are held Mondays 3:30-4:30, Wednesdays 8:00-8:50 and during lunch times on Friday. Attendance at all rehearsals is vital in order for students to experience success.  To give the students the opportunity to also participate in other extra-curricular pursuits, sometimes they may need to split practice times between the two activities.

Instruments in Beginner Band include flutes, clarinets, trumpets, french horns, trombones, euphoniums and tubas, and are available for students’ use.  Mrs. Merrett will assign instruments to band students according to a variety of factors, in order to have a balanced band – students might not receive their first choice of instrument.   After Christmas, a few clarinet and flute players will be chosen to switch to the saxophone.  Those students wishing to study percussion will be required to learn the bells and other accessory instruments along with the snare drum.  A rhythm aptitude test will be given before a student will be designated a percussionist and preference may be given to those students with a background in piano or another instrument.

In order to ensure the best experience for everyone involved in the Beginner Band program, it is necessary to have a balanced distribution of instruments.  This means that students may not be assigned their top instrument choice.  A band is a musical team, and, like a baseball team can’t have just 1st basemen, a band cannot be successful without balanced instrumentation.

A Band program is very expensive to run and although the Department of Education supports this program through providing the teacher and facility, there is much more required.  Band Fees ($60) are used toward instrument maintenance and replacement, purchase of music, method books and supplies, band activities as required, such as bussing, special events, Festival entry fees, clinician fees, and awards.  Should more funds be required due to an especially busy year or more costly undertaking, short-term fund-raisers such as a variety show, dessert tea or other event may be planned  Instruments are available to rent from PRMS for $60 for the year. This allows students to have their own instrument for band which they are expected to take home to practice regularly.  This brings the total due to $120 (including percussionists) unless a student owns their instrument, and there is a family maximum rate of $210. Fees may be paid over time or with post-dated cheques. It is not the intention of PRMS to exclude a student from the program due to an inability to pay band fees.  Please contact Mrs. Merrett if you are experiencing concern or have questions.

PRMS has an active Music program, with students performing at regular school concerts, as well as community events, and representing our School at the Annapolis Valley Music Festival, and the Atlantic Band Festival.  Band and Choir members work very hard for the success of the program through mandatory participation at frequent rehearsals and at-home practice.  For continued success, parent participation is also necessary, from encouraging practice, to providing transportation to rehearsals and concerts, and assisting where possible behind the scenes on concert days.

Students:      Please remember that the success of the Music Program at PRMS is the responsibility of each of its members, as well as of me, its Director.  In order for the Bands to reach their full potential, each person involved must make a whole-hearted effort to support the program.  This means frequent practice of instrument and music assigned, attendance at rehearsals with instruments, music, pencil, good attitude conducive to learning, and attendance at all concerts.  Without a commitment to all of these aspects of the program, a student will not be doing his or her best to support the program and may forfeit membership in the performing group.

Parents:         It should be understood that by encouraging your son or daughter to parcipate in the Band program, you will ensure that he or she attends all rehearsals and concerts.  Transportation is the responsibility of the parent or guardian, as each band will have a rehearsal before and after school, outside of bus run times.  In addition, help is required behind the scenes when the students perform. (many volunteers are needed following concerts to ensure the gym is ready for class the next morning)

Please indicate below any other areas in which you feel able to contribute to the success of our program.
